Your top 10 foreign language films

Postby trevor826 » Fri Jun 24, 2005 1:22 pm

I'm not one for lists myself but I remember we had a good response to this topic before the crash, just list your favourite 10 foreign films preferably in order.

Now I've restarted this I'll have to try and work out my own top 10.

Cheers Trev.

I thought about re-starting this topic, but honestly I wonder if top tens are enough. I mean they're simple, and can offer some great recomendations to visitors, but can ten films really describe your taste in movies? There are films and directors I absolutely love that wouldn't be represented in a top ten or twenty, or hell maybe even 50. Some directors are a blast to watch but don't have any specifically great films, particularly Seijin Suzuki and his American counterpart Samuel Fuller. That said I still will chime in, although mine hasn't really modified much.

8 (1963) - Federico Fellini
Weekend (1967) - Jean Luc Godard
To Live (1994) - Zhang Yimou
Napoleon (1927) - Abel Gance
La Dolce Vita (1960) - Federico Fellini
Landscape in the Mist (1988) - Theo Angeloupolus
Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980) - Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Andrzej Wajdas Warsaw Trilogy: A Generation, Kanal, Ashes and Diamonds (1954,1957,1958) - Andrzej Wajda
The Color of Pomegranates (1969) - Sergei Paradjanov
The Man With a Movie Camera (1929) - Dziga Vertov

I know it hasn't changed much, but well it takes a lot to shake my top ten.

btw Trevor, where's your list that you were gonna post?

pardon me but I'm bumping some old topics because I'm hoping in some small way I can spark a little more debate in these threads that shouldn't be dead yet.

Can't do a top 10 so I'll list 10 of my favourites and films that have affected me in some way.

In no particular order.

Ju Dou - Zhang Yimou - China
At the Height of Summer - Anh Hung - Tran Vietnam
The Isle - Ki-duk Kim - South Korea
Ai no Corrida - Nagisa Oshima - Japan
Persona - Ingmar Bergman - Sweden
400 Blows - Franois Truffaut - France
Three Colours Trilogy - Krzysztof Kieslowski - France/Poland
The Mirror - Andrei Tarkovsky - Russia
Seven Samurai - Akira Kurosawa - Japan
Blue Gate Crossing - Chin-yen Yee - Taiwan

Balls that's 10 already, there are so many others that could easily make the list.

The Mirror really seems to be a popular film amongst the regulars here. I've been meaning to watch it again. I loved it the first time, but apparently not as much as some of you.

BTW what Oshima film is that (whay I mean is does it have an English title), his films are not easy to come across, although I did find a source for Death by Hanging, so within a few weeks I should be able to see it.

Sorry the Oshima film is the infamous In the Realm of the Senses, totally blew me away when I first saw it somewhere around 1981.

The great thing about these lists is that it gives me the incentive to try and hunt out films I've often never heard of, the problem though is that a lot of them are almost impossible to find.
