I was bored, so I re-arranged the AFI's list

Postby wpqx » Sat Aug 13, 2005 2:34 pm

I've seen all 100 films on this list (actually I had them all seen several years ago). Out of boredeom, I decided to take the same 100 films, and just change the order to better suit my tastes. This isn't trying to justify the list as a (this is how it should have been). I haven't made any substitutions, just used what was given. As you can see, the list bears a few resemblences to the actual list, but the more it progresses, the stranger my placement seems to get. If any of you can do a similar list, and feel like it, go nuts, if not just bitch about my picks and debate whether or not the AFI was better, or myself.

For reference the AFI list is posted here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI...s#The_list

Havent seen about 25 of those films, yet (and I dont plan to see them all), but I think the AFI list is more or less a representation of similar "consensus" lists. As an itroduction to American cinema it's fine indeed, but a list compiled by experts should not contain so much usual suspects. There couould have been some more surprises and unknown films.
As a comparison I recommend Jonathan Rosenbaums alternative Top 100 (I don't have the link right now, but it shouldn't be too hard to find on the internet - EDIT: here's the link: Alternative 100).

My own list would probably be a mix of the two, and some rather unknown or underappreciated additions.

What if everyone makes their alternate Top 100 US Movie List?
Shouldn't be too hard, and would sure fuel some discussions, as well as revealing some unknown treasures.

I'm all about it, and only around 1/2 of these films would make my own list. Stupid and innacurrate as it may be, this list holds special significance to me, because it is what I used to explore film. This was my point of reference to begin my obsessive movie watching, so many of these films were my first taste of great moviemaking, as well as horribly overrated nonsense. Some films perhaps I should see again (Shane I absolutely hated and perhaps wouldn't if I saw it again), but well some are vampire food. I actually will try and navigate a top 100 of my own, and I do believe I've seen Rosenbaum's list years ago.

did a quick search his list is here:

Damn interesting actually, and certainly has a few odd ball choices (Zabriskie Point?), but check it out and between the two of them I might be able to throw my own together.

Ok, Ive started my own one. Will surely change in time, but for now this is it. I posted it under best & worst, if you dont mind.

And by the way, the AFI list has some British flicks on it, as far as I know. For example Lawrence of Arabia, Clockwork orange, or The Third Man.

yes but I believe they had American funding (so that's their classification. I included Lawrence and Clockwork (partially because they were on the AFI list)
