Shochiku, for which, like Ozu, Shimizu made most of his films, finally released the first box set devoted to his work a couple of months ago. Those four films were part of it. Incidentally, the second set just came out today. Can't wait! Both Ozu and Mizoguchi thought very highly of Shimizu who reportedly made more than 160 films but only about 25% of them survive today.

No: R2/NTSC (Japan). Released by Shockiku's home video arm.

Speaking of Japanese Cinema you might want to check out this site. Lots of hard to find films to order.

Not yet, but I was going to pick up The Ceremony and maybe a Mizoguchi or two and proceed from there.

Some of the films listed don't have subtitles. But that's not as big a problem for me compared to aspect-ratios, which aren't mentioned and usually aren't tended to when it comes to low-price DVD-Rs. Keep me updated.

I'd consider subtitles to be the more important feature, but I'm sure if you email him you can get some information.

True.

A couple of suggestions re: Mizoguchi: Hold off on Women of the Night for now as it's reportedly in the works at Criterion, and pass up on the thoroughly mediocre Flame of My Love which I just watched last week.
