Would you believe the most enchanting musical of the year is an almost four-hour-long epic about a ragtag group of 19th-century Indian farmers who form a cricket team to take on an arrogant British captain? The old-fashioned Hollywood musical is alive and well in India's Bollywood industry, where the joyful explosion of music and dance and innocent romance abounds in sweeping epics. In this infectious tale of bloodless revolution, the underdog outcasts and oddballs of a fractured village pull together into a unified team to take on the oppressive colonial Brits at their own game. Think The Longest Yard meets The Seven Samurai by way of Rudyard Kipling, with cricket bats, choreographed dance numbers, romantic triangles, and a rousing call to solidarity. There are no surprises, but what spirit, what color, what good fun! --Sean Axmaker

Deceptive advertising
The DVD is in PAL format. Work on the computer but the description cleary says NTSC for USA and canada. So the seller is essencially lying and should be made to retract their statement or banned from amazon.

If you really have four hours to burn...
"Lagaan" starts like it might have something to communicate about the various human reactions to colonialism, but it ends up as your typical "big game" movie ... somehow occupying a heretofore undiscovered space between "In the Name of the Father" and "Shaolin Soccer" and suffering the same fate as every other flick that's ever tried to have it both ways (whatever ways those might be).
I stuck with the whole four hours intrigued because I couldn't imagine that such an ambitious and voluminous work would be headed for the only conclusion I could conceive ... one way too inevitable for audience and critic alike.
Shows what I know.

Fast and what I asked for.
I ordered this DVD for my sister's birthday but I was a little late in ordering it. I expected it to arrive a week late but instead it arrived in only 4 days from the day I ordered it.
