Chinese courtesans attempt to find happiness within the opulent walls of a late-19th century brothel. Manipulation and seductive extravagance abound as the women learn to connive and manipulate their way through a precarious world of decorum, addiction and greed in this haunting film from director Hsiao-hsien Hou. The ensemble cast includes Shuan Fang, Michiko Hada, Annie Shizuka Inoh, Jack Kao and Tony Leung Chiu Wai.
