Gypsy Smith (Sidney Poitier) is a gunfighter and bounty hunter who leads the U.S. army into an Indian settlement on a mission to capture a suspected renegade. When the Army slaughters the entire village, Gypsy adopts the sole survivor, a boy named Corby (Billy Wirth). But when Gypsy is put in charge of the Old West's first black settlement -- and history threatens to repeat itself -- he and Corby must fight to save their people.
