Tennessee Williams's short novel finds American actress Karen Stone (Helen Mirren) en route to Rome when her wealthy husband (Brian Dennehy) suffers a fatal heart attack on the plane. Nevertheless, Karen decides to stay in Italy, where she falls for a handsome young gigolo (Olivier Martinez), and the two launch a passionate but ill-fated affair. This made-for-TV adaptation received five Emmy nominations.
