Done in by life and contemplating suicide, writer Harry Haller (Max von Sydow) embarks on a spiritual journey for peace in this avant-garde adaptation of Hermann Hesse's novel. Abstract visual effects add to the surreal story as Harry undergoes an internal struggle to gain a clearer understanding of his true nature. His quest takes a positive turn when he encounters a beautiful muse (Dominique Sanda) who helps him find his way.
