After losing both of her parents to the cholera epidemic of 1832 and subsequently being evicted from the family home, 16-year-old Cissie Brodie takes on the responsibility of raising her younger brothers and sisters. Living in an abandoned building, Cissie (Tracy Whitwell) is aided only by a local carpenter named Matthew (Ray Stevenson) as she struggles to care for her siblings in the bleakest of conditions.
