In order to finish research to prove his controversial theory that Shakepeare was a Spanish Jew, an American scholar (John Malkovich) relocates with his unhappy wife (Catherine Deneuve) to an isolated and ancient monastery, where he hopes to find the documents he needs. There, they meet the creepy and sinister Baltar, the monastery's guardian. Manoel de Oliveira directs this narrative on good versus evil.
