At the age of 27, Kher shot to stardom playing a 65-year-old man in the Hindi drama Saaransh (1984) and quickly became a staple of Indian cinema, appearing in more than 200 films over the course of his career.
Western audiences first caught a glimpse of Kher in the crossover sports comedy Bend It Like Beckham (2002), opposite Parminder Nagra, and later in Bride and Prejudice (2004), before he appeared on U.S. television as Nagra's on-screen father in "ER" (2004).
