Adam Goldberg

With an acerbic manner and a knack for mining his characters' neuroses, Adam Goldberg first impressed critics as the wisecracking Pvt. Stanley Mellish in Saving Private Ryan (1998). But this was far from the actor's first role: Goldberg, who bowed on the big screen in 1992's Mr. Saturday Night, began studying drama at the Lee Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles at age 14.

Born Oct. 25, 1970, in Santa Monica, Calif., Goldberg grew up in Southern California and was educated at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. The same year he appeared in Saving Private Ryan, Goldberg made his directing debut with the indie thriller Scotch and Milk. Although he has continued to work behind the camera, he's best known for his work in front of the lens in films such as Dazed and Confused (1993), A Beautiful Mind (2001) and Zodiac (2007).

Goldberg's TV work includes recurring roles on "Friends" and "Joey."
