Johnny Depp

Once a teen heartthrob, Johnny Depp has since become a venerated actor who chooses roles from all parts of the spectrum. Born June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Ky., he dropped out of school to become a musician.

Depp made his film bow in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street and later starred for three seasons on television's "21 Jump Street." In his first screen pairing with director Tim Burton -- 1990's Edward Scissorhands -- Depp established his reputation for playing quirky characters, risk-taking and memorable performances. Also adept at drama, he portrayed an undercover cop in Donnie Brasco (1997) and a drug trafficker in Blow (2001).

Two years later, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl spun Depp into box-office gold and brought him a Best Actor Oscar nod -- an honor repeated in 2004 (Finding Neverland) and 2007 (Sweeney Todd). Depp doubled down in 2010 with Golden Globe nominations for Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist.
