In short, Martin is a "wild and crazy guy," a phrase he made famous during one of his many memorable guest stints on "Saturday Night Live." Born in Waco, Texas, on Aug. 14, 1945, Martin hadn't planned to become an actor; in fact, he was pursuing a philosophy degree at Cal State University, Long Beach, before comedy called.
Later, Martin performed in a slew of acclaimed movies, including The Jerk (1979), The Lonely Guy (1984), Roxanne (1987), Parenthood (1989), Father of the Bride (1991), L.A. Story (1991), The Spanish Prisoner (1998) and Cheaper by the Dozen (2003). He's also written a stage play, "Picasso at the Lapin Agile."
